Social media has become a daily part of modern life, luring people with a constant barrage of entertainment, short form distraction, and endless scrolling. As society has become increasingly depressed and disengaged, scientists, sociologists, and psychologists began to question if social media was involved in the root cause. The consensus? Social media use is scientifically linked to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and even suicidal ideation. This is incredibly alarming for anyone deciding to be on social media, but even more so for our youth and teens who have not yet fully developed their brain function and are therefore more susceptible to the harmfulness of social media.
As study after study come out about the potential dangers of social media use, many people are beginning to pose the question: Should I quit social media?
Christians, as followers of Jesus, often times make decisions that may seem odd to the world around them. This is because, in everything they do, they are trying to ask and answer the question "What would the Lord have me do?". The answer, obviously, depends on the person and the path and purpose God set before each one.
That's why, answering the question "Should Christians Quit Social Media?" is not going to be a one-size-fits-all answer.
We should start by prefacing that, as with anything, if the Holy Spirit prompts you to quit social media, you should. No questions asked! In the Christian walk, we are called to be obedient to the Spirit, and not to the flesh (Romans 8:9-17).
There are other Christians who have not heard a specific word regarding what to do with social media, and struggle with question of what to do.
For Christians, the question often arises: Should we even be on social media? The concerns are valid—mainstream social platforms can be overwhelming, filled with negativity, comparison, and temptation. So, is it better for Christians to walk away entirely?
Balancing Faith and Social Media
For incredibly obvious reasons, The Bible doesn’t mention social media, but in the Word of God we find wisdom that guides us. In Philippians 4:8, we’re encouraged to focus on whatever is true, noble, and praiseworthy. If your time online leads to anxiety, envy, or sin, it's time to do things differently. But quitting social media isn’t the only solution.
Redeeming the Digital Space
Instead of abandoning social platforms, consider how they can be redeemed. Christians can use social media to spread light, share truth, and build community. Whether it’s posting uplifting messages, connecting with like-minded believers, or sharing testimonies, these digital spaces can serve a greater purpose.
And the platform that you share this on matters.
